Geographic Variation in Camouflage Specialization by a Decorator Crab.

In North Carolina, the decorator crab Libinia dubia camouflages almost exclusively with the chemically noxious alga Dictyota menstrualis. By placing this alga on its carapace, the crab behaviorally sequesters the defensive chemicals of the plant and gains protection from omnivorous consumers. However, Dictyota is absent north of North Carolina, whereas Libinia occurs as far north as New England...

Image camouflage based on Generate Model

To protect image contents, most existing encryption algorithms are designed to transform an original image into a texture-like or noise-like image which is, however, an obvious visual sign indicating the presence of an encrypted image and thus results in a significantly large number of attacks. To address this problem, we propose a new image encryption concept that a meaningful normal image tha...

Synaesthetic colours do not camouflage form in visual search

One of the major issues in synaesthesia research is to identify the level of processing involved in the formation of the subjective colours experienced by synaesthetes: are they perceptual phenomena or are they due to memory and association learning? To address this question, we tested whether the colours reported by a group of grapheme-colour synaesthetes (previously studied in an functional m...

Patterns of semantic relations to improve image content search

This paper reports on a study to explore how semantic relations can be used to expand a query for objects in an image. The study is part of a project ith the overall objective to provide semantic annotation and search facilities for a virtual collection of art resources. In this study we used semantic elations from WordNet for 15 image content queries. The results show that, next to the hyponym...

Search Image Formation in the Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata).

Blue jays trained to detect Catocala moths in slides were exposed to two types of slide series containing these moths: series of one species and series of two species intermixed. In one-species series, detection ability increased with successive encounters with one prey type. No similar effect occurred in two-species series. These results are a direct demonstration of a specific search image.
